When I was a kid I always thought of summer as lasting all of June, July and August. But here we are at the start of August and my thoughts were, “What can I write about that wraps up the summer and transitions into the fall.” So much of our lives, at least for those with kids is dictated by the school calendar. One person told a teacher she was lucky to have a job with a two month vacation. She replied, it was more like a two month recuperation. Work is hard, that’s why we call it work. One business management expert said, “Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don’t need to escape from.” I kind of agree and kind of don’t with that advice. We should set up a life that is worthy of pouring our lives and resources into. One that is valuable enough we don’t want to escape from. But that may not lead to an easy life at all.

Paul wrote, “My goal is to know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.” (Phil. 3:10). Our goal as Christians is to become like Christ. That won’t always be easy. Sometimes it feels so good to get away from it all. But sometimes it feels just as good to sit down and relax for a moment at the end of an exhausting day when you have put all your energy into something you really care about. I hope we can all have those kind of days when we serve Jesus, but at the end collapse and say it was worth every moment. See you Sunday.
